Intro

IMET designs and manufactures metal-cutting saws, a sector in which mechanical precision, reliability and ease of use are essential.

As its machines and market requirements evolved, the company recognised that the development of future products could no longer rely on mechanical engineering alone. Software, connectivity and remote service capabilities needed to become integral parts of the machine architecture.

Together with EXOR International and CORVINA, IMET developed a new generation of machines based on edge computing, advanced operator interfaces and remote connectivity.

The project enabled IMET to bring software development closer to its internal engineering activities, redesign the operator experience and create a connected technological foundation that can support future digital services.

The result is not simply a new machine, but a new approach to developing products that are more intuitive, flexible and ready to evolve.

IMET wanted to develop a new generation of machines while establishing a more structured model for managing software, connectivity and after-sales support.

The new architecture combines edge devices, advanced HMIs and CORVINA connectivity within a more integrated environment. This allows IMET to manage the relationship between mechanics and software more effectively while preparing its machines for remote monitoring, faster assistance and future IoT-based services.

IMET’s Challenge

Bringing software development closer to the machine

As machine functionality became more advanced, IMET needed to complement its strong mechanical expertise with a more structured and integrated software component.

Software development had previously depended largely on external partners. Although this approach supported earlier machine generations, it limited IMET’s ability to modify applications quickly, manage updates independently and evolve the product according to changing market requirements.

At the same time, the company was developing a new and more advanced type of machine. This required not only a new product design, but also a different technological architecture and a new internal development model.

The challenge was therefore broader than introducing new hardware or software.

IMET needed to:

  • reduce dependence on external software providers;
  • integrate software development with machine engineering;
  • modernise the operator interface;
  • preserve accessibility and ease of use;
  • improve remote service capabilities;
  • build internal expertise for future machine generations.

The central question was clear: how could IMET bring mechanics, software and connectivity together without making the machine more difficult to operate or manage?

The Solution

A connected edge architecture designed around operators and service

The answer came through a joint project involving IMET, EXOR International and CORVINA.

The previous embedded architecture was replaced by a new platform based on MicroEdge Basic, the eX721 operator panel and JMobile Runtime Software.

This created a more structured technological foundation for machine operation and enabled IMET to redesign the interface according to the real needs of its operators.

CORVINA added the connectivity layer required to extend the machine beyond local operation. Through VPN connectivity, IMET can remotely access installed machines, monitor their use and collect information that can support technical assistance and future digital services.

The new architecture brings together:

  • edge computing and machine connectivity;
  • an entirely redesigned operator interface;
  • greater integration between machine components;
  • remote access for technical assistance;
  • machine-use monitoring and data collection;
  • a simpler and more intuitive operating experience.

The project therefore supports both the machine’s current requirements and IMET’s longer-term digital development.

The Value of CORVINA in the Project
